What Is Coaching
"Coaching is a process that enables learning and development to occur and thus performance to improvement. To be a success a Coach requires a knowledge and understanding of a process as well as the variety of styles, skills and techniques that are appropriate to the context in which the coaching takes place."
Eric Parloe
Common activities that happen during coaching are:
- The exploration of needs, motivations, skills and thought processes to assist the individual in making real, lasting change
- The use of questioning techniques to facilitate the coachees own thought processes in order to identify solutions and actions rather than a directive approach
- Support in setting appropriate goals and methods of assessing progress in relation to these development goals
- Observation, listening and questioning to understand the coachees situation
- A consistent positive regard by the coach for the coachee – supportive and non judgemental with regards to views, lifestyle, approach and aspirations
- The development of personal competencies by encouraging a commitment to growth and change
- Discouragement of dependency on the coach
- Evaluation of progress
